SO......we drove to the top of Max Patch Mountain to Max Patch Bald which we had read was a 1/4 mile walk across the road from the parking lot???? I Don't Think So, my burning muscles and lungs will tell everyone it isn't so. And so will this picture. Maybe they should have said 1/4 mile hike with a HUge incline!
So accepting the inevitable, up we went to what we were dying to see - a Panoramic view of the Smokies and what was supposed to be a scene out of The Sound of Music. This was not meant to be as if from nowhere the clouds engulfed us and changed the view from "The Sound of Music" to "A
Walk in the Clouds".
We could see maybe 20ft in front of us, but we wanted to get to the top so that Jeff could have his "I've been on another part the Appalachian Trail" experience.
So 20 minutes later we are at the top of the Bald and Standing next to an authentic Appalachian Trail Marker! Wahoo!
What comes next? Our "the hills are alive with the sound of music" moment? Nope, the clouds didn't clear before we decided to head back down.
It was more - Oh Geez, we have to go back down with the thought of 'I hope we can drive the car in all this and not go off the side of the cliff"
We made the walk down without anyone being sucked into the clouds, or twisting an ankle. But we all had soaking wet hair and muddy shoes.
